May playlist: Summer Jamz (Don)

Posted on 07 June 2009 by don

Hi.  I’m new here.  But it’s pretty awesome so far.

Ready for RCMTC!

Since I’m new, I thought I’d use my mix to introduce myself.  I’m a teacher, so summers are pretty special for me.  This mix is what they are like:

  1. Walking Distance — Buzzcocks
  2. Go Wild In The Country — Bow Wow Wow
  3. Truck — The Octopus Project
  4. It’s Not the Heat, It’s the Humanity — The Bouncing Souls
  5. It’s a Bright Light — Tuesday
  6. Keeping Warm in the Nighttime — Pinhead Gunpowder
  7. Heat/Humidity — So Many Dynamos
  8. Help Help — Mates Of State
  9. Cool This Madness Down — Common Rider
  10. Express Yourself — N.W.A.
  11. Summertime — The Fire Theft
  12. You are the Sunshine of My Life — Stevie Wonder
  13. The Summer Ends — American Football

Summer starts off with a party.  A party that words cannot describe.  You go a little bit wild.  You dance a round a little bit and smile a lot.  Then it gets unbearably hot, but you don’t care because it’s summer!  Then it gets really bright outside all the time.  No matter, it’s summer!  Even at night, it’s sunny and hot.  Okay, this is starting to get ridiculous.  No rain for a whole month?  AARRGH!  This is driving me crazy!  I need some sort of help.  That’s what I’m saying.  Just relax and enjoy the cooling evenings of early autumn.  Remember who you are.  Sit by the ocean a while and, if you can, share your last restful moments of summer with the person that means the most to you.  Remember there’s probably something better than sunshine in your life.  Something that will fuel you through the upcoming winter.  And then, we’ll see what happens when the summer ends.

So that’s summer for a teacher as best as I can capture it with my music collection.  I’m looking forward to it!

Do your homework (download this mix).

See everyone next month.

May playlist, Summer Jamz (Robby)

covers

So, this was my first mix for RCMTC, and it was a lot of fun. I had a hard time narrowing down how I wanted to interpret the theme, so I ended up doing four mini-mixes. Hopefully that’s not cheating! After listening to it a few times, I think it actually flows together pretty nicely (with the exception of the Immortal song on the Metal-mix, I find myself repeatedly skipping over that one. Oops, Bad call.)

Anyways, here they are, enjoy!

DOWNLOAD HERE

Road trip:

You and your best friend just said fuck everything and are taking off for the weekend, it’s a hot summer morning and you’re setting off east, toward the mountains, but no real clue where y’all are headed. You just know you don’t have shit to do until Monday and that’s all you need.

Tracks:

  1. The Wagon – Dinosaur Jr.
  2. True Zero – Zero Zero
  3. Amityville Horror – Silent Majority
  4. Mutt – The Saturday Knights
  5. Across the Shields – Torche
  6. For Huey, With Love & Squalor – Splurge
  7. Speakers Push the Air – Pretty Girls Make Graves

Hot summer dusk on the porch:

It’s a hot summer night, and you’re chillin’ out on the porch because the AC is broke and going inside would be stupid. There’s fireflies everywhere, it’s humid as shit and that tall, cool glass of sweet tea is the best fucking thing in the world right now.

Tracks:

  1. By this River – Three Mile Pilot
  2. Dust Devil Girls – Foxgloves
  3. A New Drink for the Old Drunk – Crooked Fingers
  4. Church of Level Track – Tim Barry
  5. Lakes of Pontchartrain – Be Good Tanyas
  6. Electric Relaxation – A Tribe Called Quest
  7. Tuff Luck – Seam

It’s summer, and you can’t fucking stand it.

This whole “summer” thing clearly isn’t working out for you. Your black clothes do nothing but attract the heat, kids are laughing at you because your corpse-paint is totally melting, and everyone is all happy and stuff. Your Carpathian sensibilities just find the whole damn thing offensive.

Tracks:

  1. Black Metal Friends – Atom & His Package
  2. Deadly Sinners – 3 Inches of Blood
  3. Call of the Wintermoon – Immortal

It’s summer… and omg you’re a huge douchebag!

Face it, you are. But chill bro’, it’s cool. Just pop that collar and say fuck what everyone else thinks. For realz. You deserve these jams!

Tracks:

  1. All Star – Smashmouth
  2. Every Morning – Sugar Ray
  3. Thong Song – Sisqo

May Playlist: Summer Jamz (Ian)

untitled1

http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/1249831/Ian%27s%20Summerjamz%20Mixtape.zip

This tape was created with a late summertime vibe. It takes place over a full summer day, beginning in the morning, up until the break of dawn. There are songs about dancing, losing girls, getting girls, your neighborhood, daydreams, running away. Its mostly filled with new school (Raphel Sadiq’s ‘Falling in Love’) and old school soul (James Brown’s ‘I Don’t Mind’), reggae (Horace Andy’s amazing rendition of ‘Sea of Love’), and some classic R’n'B influenced hip-hop (Lauryn Hill’s ‘That Thing’.) I tried to blur the lines between the few genres I cover, and you’ll notice that it skips around 3-4 decades. Like all good mixtapes, It ends with a nice ballad, a bossa love ballad! Like many other tapes there are a few summertime standards, and a few tracks you probably haven’t heard yet. Its short, 59 Minutes 36 seconds and upbeat, hopefully it’ll keep your attention. Best to listen to in the car driving somewhere in the south end where the roads are flat, or late at night when things wind down. Enjoy Summer time, Enjoy Seattle!

01 Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me).mp3 – The Temptations
02 Why Don’t They Let Us Fall In Love.mp3 – The Ronettes

May Summer Jamz Playlist (Aiko)

Posted on 01 June 2009 by Aiko Akers

Straight-up mainstream, commercial music is often the best summer music I think: stuff everybody knows and everybody can sing along with.  Stuff that’s playing on the radio and blasting from everybody’s car stereo.  This is a mix of that music with some old songs, newer songs, and random upbeat tracks from otherwise not super summery albums.  Some of these songs I associate with specific summers, some of them I just think you can groove to.  The first CD is more upbeat stuff; it’s road-trip tested and approved.  The second mix is more for chilling out.  I put these together so they work as either one long mix or as individual mixes.

Click on the title to download each mix.

Disc 1: Heating Up
1.    Hazel Eyes—The Darkness
2.    You Shook Me All Night Long—AC/DC
3.    Kids In America—The Muffs
Just try not to drive fast with the windows down while listening to this song.
4.    You! Me! Dancing!—Los Campesinos
If you’ve never seen these guys live and get an opportunity, I highly recommend it.  So much energy, so much fun.
5.    Mardy Bum—Arctic Monkeys
6.    The Modern Age—The Strokes
7.    Together Forever In Love—Go Sailor
8.    I Was Born (A Unicorn)—The Unicorns
This is off Who Will Cut Our Hair When We’re Gone, which is one of my favorite albums of all time and I can listen to in any season.  But this song is especially good in summer.
9.    Take It Off—Dick Dale
Clearly, the king of the surf guitar belongs on a summer mix.
10.     Hey Ya—Outkast
I strongly associate this song with the summer of ‘04.  It was featured at every house party I went to.
11.    Move Your Feet—Junior Senior
Ditto with this song.
12.    Pacemaker—Jamie T
This album, Panic Prevention, is one of my favorites.  Also good any time of year.
13.    Si Señor—Control Machete
This is possibly my favorite summer jam in this whole mix.  It’s just this kind of menacing sounding Mexican rap.  The thing about it is, the worse your stereo, the better it sounds.  I love driving to it; I have a pretty crummy car stereo.
14.    Random—Lady Sovereign
15.    Shut The Club Down—Girl Talk
Girl Talk=instant dance party.
16.    I Can’t Get You Out Of My Head—Kylie Minogue
I should feel shame for how much I love this song, but I don’t.  Also a classic from my pre-21 house party days.
17.    Canned Heat—Jamiroquai
Another one that was big at house parties when I was 19, pre-Napoleaon Dynamite.
18.    Crazy—Gnarls Barkley
Nothing says summer ‘06 to me like this song.
19.    No One—Alicia Keys
Crank this and drive.

Disc 2: Cooling Down
1.    You’re Gorgeous—Baby Bird
Because what says summer more than a semi-exploitative fling?
2.    Gemini (Birthday Song)—Why?
3.    Temptation—New Order
4.    Niagara Falls—Harlem Shakes
If you talk to me about music for more than two minutes, you’ll likely learn of my love of this band.  After at least three years together, their first album, Technicolor Health, finally came out in March, and I listen to it about once a day. It’s a good one for spring and summer.
5.    Lovedust—Luna
6.    For the Actor—Mates Of State
Not really what I’d think of as a summery band, but if some cruise line can use this song to sell vacations, I figure it fits on here.
7.    Climbing—Persephone’s Bees
8.    Uh-Oh, Love Comes To Town—Talking Heads
I’m super into this as a sumer jam right now.
9.    Dancing In The Street—The Mamas & The Papas
10.    Don’t You Just Know It—The Sonics
Some classic local flavor.
11.    Parties In The U.S.A.—Jonathan Richman
12.    Shake-N-Stomp—Dick Dale
13.    Hot Fun In The Summer Time—Sly & The Family Stone
The informal survey this month’s mixes suggests this might be the most-included song this time around.
14.    Wait Till The Summer Comes Along—The Kinks
15.    Muriel The Actor—Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel
I love Steve Harley and this album, The Human Menagerie, is great summer listening.  I’m into anything with a calypso sound to it.
16.    Jogging Gorgeous Summer—Islands
17.    Don’t Look Back—David Lindley

Enjoy!
